SLEEP RELATED PROBLEMS

Sleep is an integral part of our lives affecting our physical and mental functioning. A problem with our sleep can therefore lead to a number of psychological and physiological problems. Often sleep problems occur due to pre-existing issues such as stress, depression, anxiety, etc., which cause sleep disorders resulting in further psychological distress and pain.

Counselling and psychotherapy is therefore extremely beneficial with sleep disorders. It helps the client firstly understand their true sleeping pattern. The therapist then helps the client understand and explore their root cause of their sleep disorder and other triggers and precipitators (including lifestyle choices) maintaining the problem. Further relaxation techniques are taught to the client that help them feel calmer before going to bed. Lastly, other cognitive behavioral techniques are also used to target anxiety and depression that may further may be maintaining the sleep problem.
