Counselling or psychotherapy is helpful for clients regarding everyday issues or more severe psychological problems. It helps them gain insight, understand and change old patterns and develop better coping mechanisms in order to overall facilitate personal growth and development.
No, there is no set amount of sessions that you have to attend during counselling. Some clients benefit from short-term therapy, while others benefit from long-term therapy. There are no strict rules upon the frequency of sessions. However, initially they normally tend to be 50 minutes once a week followed by longer gaps between each session. This is so that the client has the time to register and reflect on the issues discussed during the session. The duration and frequency of therapy depends on the individual needs of the client and the overall nature of counselling.
Your first appointment will start with a basic history exploring your concerns and your reason to choose therapy at this time. Together we will develop insight and mutually agree on an agenda for your therapy including realistic goals you would like to achieve and the number and frequency of sessions required. You will sign an informed consent, which will hold information regarding fees, cancellation policies, confidentiality, etc. Any further questions or clarifications will be provided specifically to the client.
